Lagos State will introduce a new driver’s licence in partnership with the Federal Government to improve road safety and speed up issuance

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a new Lagos State driver’s licence in partnership with the Federal Government as part of efforts to improve road safety, enhance traffic regulation and speed up the issuance process for motorists.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday during the 2026 annual ministerial press briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja.

The briefing was organised to mark the second-term seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in Lagos State.

Osiyemi said the new Lagos State driver’s licence will be launched within the next few weeks and will operate alongside the existing federal driver’s licence system.

He explained that motorists will have the option of obtaining either the federal licence or the new Lagos-issued version under a collaborative arrangement between state and federal authorities.

The initiative, according to him, is designed to improve efficiency, reduce delays in processing licences and promote greater road discipline across the state.

He added that the reform forms part of a broader transport modernisation agenda focused on digital enforcement, vehicle monitoring and regulatory compliance.

As part of road safety enforcement measures, Osiyemi said the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service has intensified operations under the “No Vehicle Inspection, No Roadworthiness Certificate” policy.

He disclosed that 1,114,080 roadworthiness certificates were issued during the review period, reflecting increased compliance with safety standards.

The commissioner also highlighted progress in digital traffic enforcement, stating that 737,340 traffic violations were recorded through the Automated Number Plate Recognition system.

Osiyemi said the development reflects Lagos State’s growing reliance on technology-driven traffic management systems to improve enforcement and safety.

Working with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps, the state processed 27,067 fresh driver’s licence applications and completed 29,810 renewals.

He added that a total of 56,876 driver’s licences were processed within the period, alongside 1,158 International Driver’s Permits.

The planned rollout of the Lagos State driver’s licence marks a significant step in the state government’s efforts to modernise transport administration and strengthen road safety enforcement in Nigeria’s commercial hub.
