LASTMA dispatch rider accidents Lagos raise concern as agency reports rising crashes and urges courier operators to obey traffic rules and improve safety compliance

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed concern over the increasing number of road crashes involving dispatch riders and commercial motorcyclists across major roads in Lagos State.

Rising dispatch rider crashes on Lagos roads concern LASTMA safety concerns were raised during a strategic engagement organised by the agency for courier and dispatch operators in the state.

The event, held at LASTMA headquarters in Oshodi, brought together stakeholders including security agencies, transport unions, road safety advocates, and government officials to address rising accident cases and improve compliance.

Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Olasukanmi Ojowuro urged riders to embrace responsible riding and strictly adhere to traffic regulations.

He said the initiative became necessary due to increasing cases of reckless riding, traffic violations, and fatal crashes involving dispatch riders across Lagos.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described dispatch riders as key partners in the state’s logistics and delivery system but stressed the need for safety compliance.

He revealed that over 862 crash victims were rescued in 2025 through emergency operations carried out by the agency.

Bakare-Oki also disclosed that 16,641 vehicles were impounded for various traffic offences, including reckless driving and traffic obstruction.

He identified major accident-prone areas such as Eko Bridge, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Otedola Bridge, Ikorodu Road, and Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

According to him, reckless overtaking, fatigue, traffic light violations, poor vehicle maintenance, and use of mobile phones while riding remain major causes of crashes.

He also noted that dispatch riders often work under pressure to meet delivery deadlines, which increases safety risks on the roads.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, also urged courier companies to implement proper training, rider documentation, and monitoring systems to improve professionalism.

Participants at the event commended LASTMA for the initiative, describing it as timely and necessary to improve road safety standards in the state.

The programme featured interactive sessions, safety lectures, and discussions on improving compliance among dispatch riders.
