Lagos State Government disburses N40m to families of LASTMA fallen officers, recognising their courage and sacrifice in active service
The Lagos State Government has disbursed N40 million to families of personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority who died in active service, officials said on Wednesday.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, announced the disbursement at LASTMA’s financial presentation ceremony held in honour of its fallen officers.
He explained that the initiative followed the agency’s 25th anniversary on 15 July 2025, when Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat, representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was moved by the risks and sacrifices associated with traffic management.
“The governor graciously approved that the families of our personnel, who died in active service, be supported with N2,000,000 each. This is not payment for their loss, as no value can equal the price of a life, but a tangible expression of state recognition for duty, courage, and sacrifice,” Giwa said.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr Olawale Musa, described the officers being celebrated as heroes who paid the ultimate price while ensuring road safety.
Musa revealed that 17 LASTMA officers died in 2025, citing examples where officers were stoned in Apapa or crushed by a trailer.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the ceremony was organised to honour the memories of the deceased and to support their families.
Twenty families reportedly benefited from the state’s financial support.
“The event recognises the unseen victories of traffic officers and underscores the state’s commitment to their welfare and road safety,” Bakare-Oki added.
