LASTMA rescues Lagos sanitation worker after truck crash leaves him critically injured in Offin Canal area
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority successfully rescued a sanitation worker from the Lagos Waste Management Authority after a severe truck accident along Offin Canal, Lagos, on February 6, 2026.
The incident involved a speeding containerised vehicle that struck the operative while he performed routine refuse evacuation duties.
Mr Baba Ibeji, the injured LAWMA operative, was crushed beneath the truck before the team from LASTMA extricated him from the wreckage.
Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, confirmed that the truck suffered brake failure while descending CMS Bridge, causing the accident.
The severely hurt worker was initially taken to Fuja Hospital but was subsequently referred to General Hospital for urgent specialist treatment due to the seriousness of his injuries.
The truck driver fled the scene, leaving behind an assistant who was apprehended and handed over to the Ebute-Ero Police Division for further investigation.
Mr Giwa condemned the reckless conduct that led to the accident and directed security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to guide possible prosecution under extant laws.
He described the response of LASTMA personnel as commendable, noting that their swift actions prevented further casualties and ensured Mr Ibeji received timely medical attention.
The incident has raised renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic safety measures, especially around areas where sanitation operatives and other municipal workers carry out essential duties.
