LASTMA Launches New Short Code for Real-Time Traffic Reporting in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced plans to introduce a dedicated short code system aimed at making it easier for residents and motorists to report road incidents and access real-time traffic information across Lagos State.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed the development during an interview on Monday, explaining that the initiative is designed to improve communication between the agency and the public while enhancing response efficiency.
According to him, the existing long-digit contact line will soon be replaced with a simpler, toll-free short code to ensure greater accessibility and convenience for road users.
“The agency is working on ensuring that we get a short code instead of the long digit that is currently running,” Bakare-Oki said.
He added that the system is expected to become operational within two to three weeks, pending final approval from telecommunications service providers.
“In the next two to three weeks, our call centre will come up with a short code that will be free. We have completed all necessary arrangements and are only awaiting final approval from the network provider,” he stated.
Bakare-Oki noted that infrastructure and supporting equipment for the new system are already being installed in preparation for deployment once approval is granted.
He explained that the platform will allow Lagos residents to report a wide range of traffic-related issues, including reckless driving, congestion, emergencies, and general road safety concerns.
The LASTMA boss also revealed that the agency currently operates a digital call centre staffed by 10 responders who handle complaints in English, Yoruba, and other local dialects.
He added that LASTMA works closely with emergency response agencies, including the Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
Bakare-Oki disclosed that the agency received nearly 300 calls between January and March, noting that a temporary decline was recorded due to system upgrades linked to the ongoing transition.
“The system has been experiencing downtime because of the integration,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the introduction of the short code system would significantly improve response time, operational efficiency, and public engagement once fully implemented.

“We assure residents that within the next two to three weeks, we will be fully back online with stronger capacity and improved service delivery,” he added.
