Laycon says his BBNaija win helped save his mother’s life, revealing how fame reshaped his family’s fortunes and personal growth
Big Brother Naija Lockdown winner, Olamilekan Agbeleshe, popularly known as Laycon, has revealed that his victory on the reality television show had a profound impact on his family, saying it helped save his mother’s life.
Laycon made the revelation during an interview on the Echo Room podcast monitored on Tuesday, where he reflected on his journey before and after fame.
The rapper and songwriter explained that life before BBNaija was financially and emotionally challenging for his family, but the outcome of the show changed their circumstances significantly.
“Winning BBNaija saved my mother’s life,” Laycon said, noting that the exposure and rewards from the competition enabled him to access critical support at a decisive moment.
He added that the experience went beyond fame, describing it as a turning point that brought both responsibility and a new perspective on life.
Laycon, who has since expanded into music, writing, acting, and filmmaking, said his post-show journey has been shaped by gratitude as well as pressure from public expectations.
He also reflected on the emotional and psychological impact of sudden fame, stating that it altered his sense of identity and creative direction.
“I lost my inner voice after BBNaija win,” he said, adding that the transition into acting was largely driven by opportunities created by his popularity rather than prior industry training.
Laycon explained that many film producers approached him based on his BBNaija visibility, often prioritising his fame over his acting experience.
“They told me how I did great in the house and wanted me on their projects,” he said.
However, he noted that he remained cautious about such offers, questioning whether they were driven by talent or commercial appeal.
“You haven’t seen me act, so I don’t think it’s because of my acting talent. I think it’s because it’s me, and you want your movie to do numbers,” he added.
The entertainer said he eventually diversified into scriptwriting and further studies as he attempted to balance music, film, and education while managing public expectations.
Laycon noted that public opinion continues to vary depending on his career choices, but said he remains focused on growth and self-development.
“Everybody would always have their opinion as to why people do what they do,” he said.
