Kalou backs Lookman’s Atletico Madrid performance, saying he was played out of position despite the 2-0 win over Barcelona

Former Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou has defended the performance of Nigeria international Ademola Lookman following Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 victory over FC Barcelona in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Kalou argued that Lookman was deployed in a more defensive role than usual, a tactical decision that limited the forward’s natural attacking instincts and overall influence on the game.

He suggested that the positional adjustment prevented the player from expressing his strengths in forward areas.

The former Ivory Coast international explained that while the result was positive for Atletico Madrid, the role assigned to Lookman required discipline and defensive contribution rather than attacking flair, which is where the Nigerian typically excels.

This, he noted, may have affected the player’s ability to enjoy the match fully.

Lookman, who joined Atletico Madrid from Atalanta during the winter transfer window, was substituted in the second half and replaced by Alexander Sørloth, who went on to score the second goal from close range to secure the victory.

Atletico Madrid had earlier taken the lead through a superb free-kick from Julián Álvarez, whose strike left Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García with no chance.

The win gives the Spanish side a strong advantage heading into the second leg of the tie.

Despite describing Lookman’s outing as below his attacking standard, Kalou expressed confidence in the player’s ability to adapt and succeed at the highest level.

He emphasised that the forward continues to enjoy widespread support from fans across Africa as he progresses in his Champions League campaign.

Kalou also praised Lookman’s qualities, describing him as an exceptional talent capable of making a significant impact when utilised in his preferred attacking role.

His remarks highlight the tactical nuances that can influence individual performances in high-stakes European fixtures.
