Ademola Lookman earns Man of the Match as Nigeria thrash Mozambique 4-0 to reach AFCON 2025 quarter-finals, awaiting Algeria or DR Congo

Ademola Lookman was named Man of the Match as Nigeria’s Super Eagles crushed Mozambique 4-0 at the Complexe Sportif de Fés, advancing to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Three-time African champions Nigeria dominated from start to finish, with Victor Osimhen scoring twice, and Akor Adams and Lookman also on the scoresheet.

Nigeria set the pace early, with Osimhen’s second-minute strike ruled out for offside, followed by Alex Iwobi testing Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan with a long-range attempt.

The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Iwobi’s exquisite pass released Adams, who squared for Lookman to calmly slot home his third goal of the tournament, giving Nigeria the lead.

Five minutes later, Osimhen doubled the advantage.

Another incisive Iwobi pass found Lookman, whose driven cross slightly deflected allowed Osimhen to tap in from close range.

Nigeria maintained control throughout the first half, entering the break 2-0 ahead.

Early in the second half, Lookman again showcased his creativity, weaving past defenders to set up Osimhen’s second goal and Nigeria’s third.

The victory was sealed in the 75th minute when Lookman provided yet another assist for Akor Adams, who blasted the ball into the net.

The Super Eagles could have extended the scoreline further but managed the remainder of the match comfortably, completing a convincing 4–0 victory their 12th goal of the tournament, the highest so far.

Lookman, who scored three goals and contributed multiple assists in the tournament, earned his second Man of the Match award at AFCON 2025, having previously won it in Nigeria’s hard-fought 3-2 win over Tunisia.

Nigeria will now prepare for the quarter-finals on Saturday, awaiting the winner of the Algeria vs DR Congo round of 16 clash scheduled for today.
