Lookman praises Super Eagles’ progress at AFCON, citing improved performance and readiness ahead of Nigeria’s quarter-final against Algeria
Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman has praised the Super Eagles’ steady progress at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, saying the team is “improving every single game” ahead of their quarter-final against Algeria’s Desert Foxes on Saturday.
Lookman, who has been Nigeria’s standout performer at the tournament, earned his second Man of the Match award in the Round of 16 victory over Mozambique.
He has registered three goals and five assists in the competition, taking his overall AFCON tally to seven goals.
“It’s been great,” Lookman said after Nigeria’s last match.
“The team is improving every single game. It’s all goals today, so that’s positive for us.”
Operating in a fluid attacking trio alongside Akor Adams and Victor Osimhen, Lookman has helped maintain a constant offensive threat for the Eagles.
He dismissed suggestions of tension with Osimhen, describing a brief verbal exchange in their last game as “just a discussion on the pitch. That’s it.”
Lookman said wearing the national colours continues to motivate his performances.
“I get the opportunity to represent my country, and I know how much weight that bears. So I try to use that pressure and try to perform,” he told reporters.
Looking ahead to the quarter-final, Lookman acknowledged the challenge posed by Algeria, Africa’s 2019 champions.
“The quarter-finals of the AFCON is something to look forward to. Another big battle awaits us, so we need to be ready,” he said.
He highlighted the physical and tactical intensity of the competition, adding: “Everyone is physically strong. It’s about meeting them on the field, being intelligent, and being ready. Same mentality from the team. Same mentality to win, to be aggressive on the ball.”
Lookman concluded with encouragement for supporters and others facing challenges: “Keep on focusing, keep on believing in yourself. Good things will come.”
Nigeria will once again look to Lookman’s inspiration as they chase a semi-final berth against Algeria.
