Mahdi Shehu reacts to Ganduje resignation, calling it “good riddance” and urges EFCC and courts to fast-track corruption cases against the ex-Kano governor

Ganduje resignation has drawn fierce criticism from prominent social critic Mahdi Shehu, who described the former APC chairman’s reported exit as “good riddance” while demanding immediate legal action on pending corruption cases.

Reacting in a post on Friday via his official X account, Shehu questioned the circumstances surrounding the resignation of Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, stating that whether he stepped down voluntarily, was pressured to leave, or was disgraced out, the result remains a “welcome relief” for both the ruling party and the Nigerian public.

Citing long-standing allegations of graft, including a controversial video in which Ganduje was seen allegedly receiving dollar bundles from contractors during his time as Kano State governor, Shehu renewed calls for justice.

“We will be eagerly waiting for the EFCC to continue with his pending case and that of his wife regarding the dirty land deal,” Shehu stated. He also urged the Kano High Court to proceed “with full force and speed” to ensure accountability.

In a scathing remark, he labelled Ganduje’s ousting as merely “Day 1” of justice. “Nigerians are waiting for Days 2, 3, 4, 5, and the final day,” Shehu added, calling for a comprehensive legal reckoning to follow the resignation.

Ganduje has long denied the corruption allegations, maintaining that the videos circulated were doctored. However, public pressure has intensified in recent months, with civil society groups and political observers urging anti-graft bodies to act decisively.

As of press time, neither Ganduje nor the All Progressives Congress had issued a formal statement confirming his resignation or responding to Shehu’s comments.

Meanwhile, legal watchers await the next move from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the judiciary.
