The approval enables Lawal to serve as Acting Governor from August 10 to September 11, 2026, while Makinde is away. The governor is expected to resume official duties on September 14, 2026.

Makinde’s annual leave was communicated to the legislature through a formal letter presented during plenary, in line with constitutional provisions requiring governors to notify their state assemblies before embarking on an extended absence from office.

The letter was read by Deputy Speaker Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin.

Following deliberations, lawmakers approved the request and expressed confidence that governance would continue smoothly under the supervision of the deputy governor.

The Oyo Assembly said the arrangement would ensure stability and uninterrupted implementation of government programmes throughout Makinde’s absence.

Lawal, who has previously supported the administration’s activities as deputy governor, will now coordinate the day-to-day running of the state until Makinde’s return.

The legislature also wished Makinde a peaceful and productive break, while maintaining that the existing relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government would continue to support effective administration in Oyo State.

Fadeyi described the transition arrangement as a reflection of the strength of the state’s governance structure, expressing confidence in Lawal’s ability to provide steady leadership during the period.

The temporary handover follows a constitutional practice designed to ensure continuity whenever a governor is unavailable, preventing disruptions in government operations and public service delivery.
