Maurizio Sarri undergoes successful heart surgery for atrial fibrillation, with Lazio confirming the manager will resume duties in the coming days
Rome, Italy Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri has undergone a minor heart operation after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, the club confirmed on Tuesday.
The 66-year-old Italian manager successfully underwent a transcatheter ablation procedure using PFA technology at Policlinico Tor Vergata hospital.
The surgery, performed by Professor Andrea Natale, a globally recognised expert with over 30 years of experience treating the condition, was attended by Lazio’s club doctor, Dr Italo Leo.
Lazio have indicated that Sarri is expected to return to his regular duties within the next few days.
Sarri, who began his second spell as Lazio manager in June 2025, currently oversees a team sitting eighth in Serie A, with six wins from 17 league matches.
Lazio are scheduled to host Napoli on Sunday, kick-off at 11:30 GMT.
The veteran coach has enjoyed a decorated career.
He started coaching lower-league Italian sides while working as a banker before moving into full-time football in the early 2000s.
Sarri gained recognition by leading Empoli to Serie A promotion in the 2013-14 season, then guided Napoli to two second-place finishes in three years.
His success led to a move to Chelsea in 2018, where he won the Europa League and reached the Carabao Cup final in a single season.
Sarri returned to Italy in 2019, winning the Serie A title with Juventus in 2019–20.
During his first tenure at Lazio from 2021 to 2024, he steered the club to a second-place finish in the 2022–23 campaign.
Lazio have expressed confidence in a swift recovery, noting that Sarri is expected to resume his role on the touchline shortly.
