The initiative, held at the MUSON Centre, highlights a commitment to nurturing the next generation of musical talent. It provides them with essential tools for building sustainable careers.

The masterclass, detailed in a statement on Tuesday, carried the theme “Business Models Every Student Musician Should Know.”

It targeted first and second year students, aiming to equip them with practical strategies for monetizing their artistic craft in today’s evolving music landscape.

Sowari Akosionu, the Chief Marketing Officer at Mdundo, provided students with a broad overview of income generating opportunities available to modern musicians.

This included traditional avenues like live performances, teaching, and session work, alongside the burgeoning potential of digital streaming.

A particular emphasis was placed on platforms like Mdundo.com, which are specifically designed to cater to Africa’s unique music economy.

Akosionu stressed the critical role of innovation in both music creation and distribution, encouraging students to look beyond conventional career paths.

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

A highlight of the masterclass was a deep dive into “Afroclassical,” an emerging genre that seamlessly blends classical music elements with African rhythms, languages, and traditional instruments.

Students found inspiration to explore this hybrid form as a promising avenue for both artistic expression and commercial viability.

“Talent alone isn’t enough,” Sowari Akosionu stated during the session.

“In today’s music industry, sustainability comes from strategy, digital access, and cultural authenticity. At Mdundo, we’re passionate about helping creatives turn passion into profit, starting as early as possible.”

The session also shed light on how Mdundo is actively reshaping music monetization across Africa through strategic collaborations with major telecom providers, including MTN, Airtel, Glo, Vodacom, and Safaricom.

These partnerships facilitate access to curated music bundles for millions of users, directly enabling artists to generate revenue through data powered distribution.

Beyond revenue models, students gained invaluable insights into securing funding through local and international grants, scholarships, and support organizations.
