Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has marked a major political realignment in Plateau State, analysts say, with implications for local governance, party cohesion, and federal relations.
Mutfwang, who cited “prayer, consultation, and deep reflection” in his decision, left the PDP amid months of internal disputes, legal battles, and factional instability.
Reports indicate that he was joined by senators, local government chairmen, and other party leaders, consolidating APC influence in the state.
The APC welcomed the defection as a “calculated and popular” move, claiming Mutfwang and his allies controlled over 90 per cent of the PDP followership in Plateau.
Party insiders argue the shift represents coordinated political migration rather than a personal decision.
Since 2015, Plateau has been a battleground of shifting alliances and personality-driven politics, with ethno-religious tensions often shaping electoral outcomes.
Mutfwang said his move aimed to “unify the state’s political class” and reconcile long-standing rivalries, publicly reconciling with former Governor Simon Lalong in a gesture that signals potential elite consensus.
Observers note a clear federal factor in the defection.
Advisers described APC alignment as the “safest option” amid PDP instability and emphasised the benefits of cooperating closely with President Bola Tinubu on security and development initiatives.
Mutfwang pledged loyalty to the presidency, stating Plateau’s influence would be “stronger from the inside.”
The PDP reacted angrily, accusing the governor of “betrayal of public trust” and “political opportunism,” and questioned whether he should retain his office following the defection.
Legal precedent, however, permits governors to maintain their mandates after switching parties, leaving moral and democratic debates unresolved.
Mutfwang’s defection could have a major impact on Plateau’s 2027 elections.
The governor projected that the state could deliver “one million votes” for the APC, signalling unprecedented consolidation if the current realignment holds.
Political analysts caution, however, that Plateau voters have historically shifted loyalties based on performance, identity politics, and security concerns.
The move forms part of a broader trend of PDP governors joining the APC, intensifying challenges for the opposition party and strengthening the ruling party’s position in Nigeria’s North Central region.
