Bala Na’Allah says APC must focus on governance and convincing Nigerians, not rely on defections, for success in the 2027 elections
Former Deputy Senate Majority Leader Bala Ibn Na’Allah has urged the All Progressives Congress to focus on governance and public persuasion rather than relying on political defections to secure victory in the 2027 general elections.
Na’Allah, who represented Kebbi South Senatorial District under the APC, spoke on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme.
His remarks come amid a wave of high-profile defections into the ruling party, including Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas.
“The APC has to work to seriously convince the people that whatever they are going through is reasonably necessary for the purpose of positioning the country for a greater future,” Na’Allah said.
He emphasised that electoral outcomes will depend more on tangible governance achievements than on the sheer number of politicians joining the party.
Reflecting on the APC’s origins, Na’Allah noted that the party was formed as a response to perceived shortcomings of the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
“We were very few members who believed that the trajectory of PDP for the years that they have been ruling has not succeeded in at least giving Nigerians the comfort to say their country was in safe hands,” he explained.
He added that the performance of defectors in their respective states will influence their political followership.
“These defections that we are talking about, a defection made by people who hold authority in their various states. To a larger extent, what they are able to do in their various states will determine the followership,” Na’Allah said.
The former senator’s comments contribute to ongoing discussions on electoral strategy and party consolidation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 polls.
