NAFDAC warns caregivers in Kaduna over tampered SMA Gold Infant Formula linked to infant illness and altered expiry dates
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an urgent warning regarding a suspected revalidated batch of SMA Gold First Infant Milk Formula (900 grams) being sold in Kaduna.
The agency stated that the product, found with altered expiry dates, has been linked to gastrointestinal distress in a four-month-old infant.
Physical inspections revealed evidence of date tampering, with preprinted stickers inconsistent with the original manufacturing details.
NAFDAC confirmed the original formula was manufactured on 28 May 2023, with a valid expiry of 28 May 2025, while the revalidated batch indicated 20 January 2025 as manufacture and 20 January 2027 as expiry.
The product carries NAFDAC registration number B1-2783.
NAFDAC highlighted serious health risks posed by compromised infant formula, including acute gastroenteritis, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, malnutrition, and potential infections in immunocompromised infants.
The agency emphasised that unapproved alteration of shelf life constitutes a significant public health threat.
The whey-dominant SMA Gold Infant Formula, manufactured by Nestlé, is designed to mimic breast milk for babies from birth to six months. NAFDAC reiterated that strict compliance with regulatory standards is essential to maintain product integrity and protect infants.
To safeguard public health, NAFDAC has instructed all zonal directors and state coordinators to remove any suspect products from circulation.
Retailers, healthcare professionals, and caregivers have been urged to verify product authenticity, obtain supplies from authorised sources, and report suspected substandard or falsified products via 0800-162-3322 or sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of all regulated products and called on stakeholders to remain vigilant throughout the supply chain.
