The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday.

According to Babafemi, the seizure followed months of intelligence gathering, surveillance and coordinated tracking of the shipment from Canada to Nigeria.

He explained that the consignment departed Toronto, Canada, on March 28 before being transported by rail to Montreal, where it was loaded onto a cargo vessel identified as Jakarta Express Voyage.

The shipment later arrived at Tanger Med Port in Morocco on April 15, where it was transferred onto another vessel, Osaka Voyage, which eventually berthed in Lagos on May 9.

Babafemi said operatives of the Marine Intelligence Unit and the Tincan Island Strategic Command monitored the container for more than two months in collaboration with international security partners, including the United Kingdom Home Office International Operations, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

He added that the operation led to the seizure of the drugs on Tuesday, May 12, during a joint examination involving NDLEA officials, officers of the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies.

According to the agency, the drugs were cleverly concealed inside two imported vehicles, a used Ford bus and a Mercedes-Benz C300 car, hidden within the shipping container.

Babafemi noted that the latest breakthrough came just days after NDLEA operatives raided a mansion in Lekki allegedly used as a drug storage facility, where 2,326 kilograms of the same substance valued at over ₦5.8 billion were recovered.

Speaking during the handover of the seized exhibits, the NDLEA Director of Seaports Operations, ACG Ibinabo ArchieAbia, described the operation as a powerful example of intelligence-driven enforcement and inter-agency collaboration against organised drug trafficking.

Reacting to the seizure, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Buba Marwa commended officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and professionalism.

Marwa said the repeated seizures of Canadian Loud suggest an organised attempt by international drug syndicates to push synthetic cannabis into the Nigerian market.

“This second massive seizure in less than a week is a clear message to international syndicates who think they can use our ports as entry points for their destructive trade,” he said.

He added that collaboration between NDLEA, the Nigeria Customs Service and international security agencies was producing significant results in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.
