The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that Nigerian athletes preparing for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, will undergo a four-week residential training camp to enhance performance at the Games.

Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, disclosed that a training base has been secured in Aberdeen, Scotland, to allow athletes to acclimatise, refine technical skills, and bond as a team ahead of the competition.

“We have deliberately positioned our preparation camp close to the competition environment to allow athletes settle early and train under similar conditions. Experience has shown us that last-minute movements across countries can be disruptive. This time, we are prioritising stability, structure, and proper coordination,” Olopade said.

Team Nigeria is scheduled to arrive at the Aberdeen camp four weeks before the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will run from July 23 to August 2 and feature ten sports disciplines.

Olopade emphasised that early-stage planning, including securing athlete-friendly accommodation, is designed to remove avoidable stress from both athletes and technical crews.

Preparations are being guided by recommendations from the Elite Podium Board, reflecting the NSC’s commitment to professionalism, evidence-based planning, and international best practices.
