Nigeria’s cooking gas price is higher than several countries including Saudi Arabia and Russia, raising concerns over energy affordability
A new review of global data has shown that Nigeria’s cooking gas price is higher than several major countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, India, and Angola.
The Nigeria cooking gas price comparison was drawn from data on the Global Petroleum Price portal as of March 16, 2026.
According to the report, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Nigeria costs about $0.674 per kilogram.
This places Nigeria among countries with relatively high cooking gas prices despite being a major oil and gas producer.
In comparison, Saudi Arabia records $0.290 per kilogram, while Russia sells LPG at $0.388 per kilogram.
Angola and Azerbaijan have some of the lowest prices at $0.109 and $0.091 per kilogram respectively.
Other countries such as India, Georgia, and Chile also maintain lower or comparable LPG prices than Nigeria.
The report further highlights a significant income gap between Nigeria and other countries, worsening affordability.
For example, Saudi Arabia’s minimum wage is significantly higher than Nigeria’s, making energy costs far more manageable for its citizens.
In Nigeria, rising LPG prices have been linked to global crude oil trends and local market adjustments.
Recent changes, including price increases from major suppliers, have also contributed to higher domestic costs.
Stakeholders warn that continued price increases could limit access to clean cooking energy for many Nigerian households.
They have called for stronger policy measures to stabilise prices and improve energy affordability across the country.
