Nigeria EU beans export ban is draining the nation’s economy by about \$363 million each year, the Alliance for Action Against Pesticide in Nigeria (AAPN) has warned.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja themed “Stop the Spread of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs)”, co-founder Prof. Simon Irtwange revealed that over 76% of Nigeria’s agricultural exports face EU rejection due to dangerous pesticide residues.

The decade-long restrictions have hit not only beans but also sesame, melon seeds, dried fish, peanut chips, groundnut, palm oil, and yam.

Irtwange said Nigeria still permits over 400 pesticide formulations, more than half of which are banned in the EU, US, and Asia. He cautioned that chronic exposure could cause cancers, reproductive issues, and neurotoxicity.

The AAPN urged lawmakers to pass a pesticide control bill and push safer farming alternatives like bio-pesticides and organic fertilisers, warning that continued use of banned chemicals damages soil, pollutes water, and endangers public health.
