Substitute Adil Boulbina scored in the 119th minute to give Algeria a 1‑0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in their Round of 16 match at Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

His dipping shot, which clipped the underside of the crossbar, denied the tie a penalty shootout and sent the North African side through to face the three-time AFCON champions.

The quarter-final match in Marrakesh on Saturday promises a continental derby, with both sides boasting a long-standing rivalry.

Historically, Nigeria and Algeria have met 22 times, with Algeria winning 10 encounters, Nigeria nine, and three ending in draws.

Nigeria famously defeated Algeria 3‑0 to win their maiden title in 1980, while Algeria claimed their first crown in 1990 with a 1‑0 win over the Super Eagles.

Following Algeria’s win, Nigeria has begun preparations for the high-stakes encounter.

The Super Eagles held a full training session at the Sardienne Complex, involving all 26 available players, including young defender Ryan Alebiosu, who is continuing his recovery.
