The university will also confer awards on Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, the institution’s founder and former governor of Kano State.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Mukhtari Atiku Kurawa made the announcement on Tuesday. He said the ceremony will take place from Friday, 25 July to Saturday, 26 July 2025, and cover academic sessions from 2018/2019 to 2023/2024.

According to him, “This year’s convocation is unique, as we will also install our new chancellor, Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I.”

Other recipients of honorary doctorates include philanthropist Hajiya Maryam Sunusi Dantata, oil entrepreneur Alhaji Aliyu Sa’idu Bebeji, and Alhaji Adamu Yahya (A.Y Maikifi).

The university’s first cohort of postgraduate students, who enrolled after the launch of postgraduate programmes in 2021, will also graduate during this combined ceremony.

A pre-convocation lecture will be held on 25 July at the City Campus, delivered by Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed and chaired by Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad.

Prof. Kurawa added that the institution has expanded from five to nine faculties, with a tenth — the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies — under NUC review.

He also confirmed plans for a Faculty of Allied Health Sciences offering degrees in Nursing, Radiography, Physiotherapy, and more.

The university’s name was officially changed from Yusuf Maitama Sule University back to Northwest University, Kano, following a bill signed by the state governor in December 2024.
