NSACC demands calmness amid xenophobic violence concerns in South Africa as chamber urges dialogue, cooperation and protection of Nigerians amid tensions in South Africa

The Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce (NSACC) has called for calm, restraint and strengthened diplomatic engagement following renewed xenophobic unrest in parts of South Africa.

NSACC calls for peace amid xenophobic tensions in South Africa was made in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos by the Chamber’s Chairman, Dr Ije Jidenma, who expressed concern over the rising tensions affecting foreign nationals.

Jidenma noted that the Federal Government of Nigeria has already taken several steps, including diplomatic engagements, investigations, legislative responses and voluntary evacuation measures to address the situation.

She said the Chamber was deeply worried about the impact of the unrest on Nigerians and other African nationals residing in South Africa, as well as the wider implications for businesses and the investment climate.

According to her, the situation also poses challenges for South African businesses, stressing that both countries must work together to prevent further escalation.

Jidenma emphasised that Nigeria and South Africa share a long-standing relationship built on mutual respect, trade cooperation and a shared vision for African development.

She warned that moments of tension require restraint and constructive engagement from all stakeholders to protect the progress achieved in bilateral relations over the years.

The Chamber urged governments, civil society organisations, community leaders and citizens on both sides to prioritise peaceful dialogue and respect for the rule of law.

It also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and protection of all residents, regardless of nationality, as a key factor in maintaining trust and stability.

Jidenma further called for sustained collaboration between Nigerian and South African authorities to address the root causes of the unrest and strengthen conflict resolution mechanisms.

She reaffirmed NSACC’s commitment to promoting unity, economic resilience and stronger ties between both nations despite the current challenges.
