NSCDC begins over N1bn headquarters infrastructure projects in Abuja, with its Commandant-General targeting completion before December ends

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has commenced infrastructure projects estimated at more than N1bn at its national headquarters in Sauka, Abuja, with Commandant-General Ahmed Abubakar Audi targeting completion and commissioning before the end of December.

Audi performed the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, describing the projects as part of efforts to reposition the Corps, improve its institutional identity and provide a more professional working environment.

The planned upgrades include the construction of a new entrance gate and quarter guard, rehabilitation of internal access roads and installation of solar-powered lighting. The projects are expected to be completed within eight weeks.

According to the Commandant-General, the initiative is intended to give the headquarters a befitting appearance, improve its physical environment and bring its facilities in line with global best practices.

He said the development was part of his administration’s four-point agenda of resuscitation, rejuvenation, re-engineering and repositioning, which places emphasis on institutional renewal, operational capacity and professional standards.

“We want to give the National Headquarters a befitting aesthetic look so that it will be in tandem with global best practice.

“We have also designed and the management, through our Tenders Board, has approved the construction of a befitting quarter guard and the access roads within the headquarters,” Audi said.

He expressed confidence that the projects would improve the appearance and functionality of the headquarters while creating an environment that reflects the Corps’ professional standards.

Audi disclosed that the infrastructure work was being funded through intervention support rather than the Corps’ regular budget. He commended President Bola Tinubu for providing the support and enabling environment required for the projects.

The Commandant-General also assured that the quality of the work would be closely monitored by the Corps’ team of professional engineers, architects and builders to ensure compliance with the required standards.

Beyond the physical improvements, Audi linked the infrastructure upgrade to the NSCDC’s broader responsibility of protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, particularly in response to emerging security threats.

He said Nigeria’s evolving security situation required stronger institutional capacity, effective collaboration and improved operational readiness among security agencies.

Describing the NSCDC as an important component of the country’s internal security architecture, Audi said the Corps served as a buffer between the military and other internal security structures.

He acknowledged the contributions of the military, police, other paramilitary agencies and the intelligence community to national security, adding that the NSCDC would continue to strengthen inter-agency cooperation.

The Commandant-General further said the Corps would leverage the professional expertise and training of the military to improve the competence and operational effectiveness of its personnel.

He reaffirmed the NSCDC’s commitment to intelligence gathering, collaboration and the protection of strategic government facilities and other critical infrastructure.

Audi also disclosed that the Corps had begun preparations for the Yuletide period, with plans for overt and covert operations, intelligence gathering and cooperation with relevant security agencies to protect Nigerians.

He assured the public that the NSCDC would support security efforts before, during and after the festive period, as well as ahead of the 2027 general elections.
