The Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) has launched a new product to reinvent the nation’s tourism industry.

Announcing the innovation while addressing journalists on Tuesday, the Director-General of NTDC, Folorunsho Coker, stated that the product is being launched to utilise the potential of tourism for economic growth.

“Across the world, tourism has evolved to become one of the fastest-growing industries.

“This growth has been driven by the deployment of advanced technology in travel and increased holiday culture. Indeed, the opportunities embedded in tourism are enormous.

“However, to fully utilize the potential of tourism for economic growth, we recognize that we cannot revert to the old ways of working, there is an urgent need to reflect and rethink what we do and how we do it.

“Therefore, we have identified the need to deploy technological solutions for sectorial growth across the tourism value chain in Nigeria.

“With over 147 million active internet subscriptions and a teledensity of almost 97%, we have a ready-made and vast domestic market for tourism development locally.

Why the Hackathon?

“As a Corporation, we launched “Tour Nigeria” as the strategic vision to market domestic tourism across the country in 2017 and we also designed an ambitious plan to reinvent the tourism industry through the CHIEF PLAN, which is an acronym that stands for Corporate Governance, Human Capital Development, Infrastructure Development, Events and Financing’’

“We have come up with the “Hackathon” to provide unique and innovative solutions to identified challenges and gaps across the tourism value chain in Nigeria, using digital tools that will be developed at scale within the next 18-24 months,” he said.

According to the NTDC DG, some of the identified challenges burdening businesses within the ecosystem include Proper Pricing, Safe Payment channels, Access to the market, Customer service and retention, and Bookings and reservations.

Coker revealed that other issues raised include Data Collection and Analytics, Distribution, Setup, System Issues, Supply Chain and Logistics.

He emphasised that the goal of NTDC is to improve the country’s ranking on the World Economic Forum competitiveness index by harnessing the growing popularity of digital technology to solve prevalent problems across the tourism value chain in Nigeria.

He said: “We want to be able to imagine a future in which a tourist’s journey experience is fully enhanced by the digitization of all support activities (from the pre-booking stages until the destination experience), with more digital interactions supported by data shared in a customized, secure and private way between the different players within the tourism ecosystem.

“To achieve this desired objective, we are looking for ideas that are scalable and sustainable on a use-case basis. Ideas that encompass Smart integration of information (Smart City), Multimodal mobility services, Customized route optimization, Ideas with sustainability in mind, and Virtual and Augmented Reality.

“The opportunities are limitless through technology, which is why we’re reaching out to the tech community to come up with new ideas for the sector. How? The initiative is a collaborative effort of the private and public sectors, where the private sector brings intellectual capacity, and the public sector provides the enabling resources that will help the ideas thrive.

“The Hackathon creates an avenue for carefully selected developers from the six geo-political zones of the country to develop digital tools that aim to solve some of the frictions and dislocations experienced across the industry. With the support of the UNWTO and the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, we believe we can achieve these objectives.”

FG Orders Full Probe Into Niger NSCDC Deaths

The Federal Government has ordered a full-scale investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State.

The directive was issued by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Friday, September 18, 2026, following the deaths reported after enforcement operations carried out by the Niger State NSCDC Command on September 15 and 16.

As part of the immediate response, the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, has been suspended from office pending the outcome of the investigation.

Tunji-Ojo said the decision was necessary to allow a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. He described the deaths as unfortunate and reiterated that the government’s priority was the protection of lives.

“We run a government whose ultimate priority is security of lives and we have worked to stay true to this,” the minister said.

The suspected illegal miners were arrested during coordinated enforcement operations around the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto axis of Niger State as part of efforts to curb illegal mining activities.

The deaths were discovered in the early hours of Thursday, September 17. Different reports have given varying figures for the number of people who died, while the NSCDC has not issued a definitive national figure. The Niger State Government and some reports have put the number at 37, while other reports have cited different figures.

Before the minister’s latest directive, NSCDC Commandant-General Ahmed Abubakar Audi had ordered the constitution of a high-powered investigative team led by the Deputy Commandant-General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation.

The panel is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including the condition of the suspects when they were arrested, the length of time they spent in custody, the conditions under which they were detained and the medical attention provided to them.

The remains of those who died were deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for medical examination to establish the actual cause of death.

The NSCDC has specifically warned against attributing the deaths to any particular disease before medical and laboratory examinations are completed. The Corps said it would not speculate on the cause of the fatalities until the relevant findings are available.

The issue has also raised questions about the conditions in which the suspects were held. An account from a survivor cited by the Associated Press alleged that a large number of detainees were kept in a poorly ventilated cell and that some detainees struggled to breathe. Those claims remain part of the broader circumstances that investigators will need to establish.

Following the suspension of Aniviye, the NSCDC is expected to ensure continuity of command in Niger State while the investigation proceeds. The Federal Government has also urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigative and medical processes to run their course.

The NSCDC has pledged to cooperate with the investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the dignity, safety and fundamental rights of people in its custody.

Audi had earlier directed that the health and welfare of all persons currently detained by the Corps be given priority, while measures are taken to protect personnel who may have come into contact with the affected detainees.

The investigation is expected to determine whether any operational, administrative or medical failures contributed to the deaths and whether further action should be taken against any personnel found to have breached established procedures or the law.

The government has also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and said the outcome of the investigation and medical examinations would guide further action.

IAEA Refers Iran to UN Security Council Over Nuclear Breach

Published

on

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors has voted to refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council over its failure to comply with nuclear safeguards obligations, marking the first such referral in two decades.

adron lemon friday

The resolution was approved on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with 23 of the IAEA’s 35 board members voting in favour. China, Russia and Niger opposed the measure, while eight countries abstained and one did not vote.

The move follows prolonged concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities and its failure to provide the IAEA with sufficient access and information needed to verify its nuclear materials and facilities.

The agency has particularly raised concerns over uranium traces discovered at previously undeclared sites and the lack of access to some nuclear facilities following attacks on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

The referral represents a significant escalation in international pressure on Tehran. The last time the IAEA Board took a similar step involving Iran was two decades ago, leading to years of United Nations Security Council action over the country’s nuclear programme.

Iran has rejected the resolution, describing it as politically motivated and arguing that circumstances surrounding recent military attacks on its nuclear facilities have made inspections difficult. Tehran maintains that its nuclear programme is peaceful.

The IAEA has estimated that Iran had about 440.9 kilogrammes of uranium enriched to 60 per cent before the recent attacks. While that material is below the roughly 90 per cent enrichment level generally associated with weapons-grade uranium, the quantity has intensified international concerns over the potential proliferation risks.

The referral now places Iran’s nuclear dispute back before the UN Security Council, although any further action could face resistance from Russia and China, which have opposed the latest IAEA measure.
