The development follows presidential approval from Bola Tinubu, which accelerated preparatory activities at the site.

An inspection team, including officials from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission and national security agencies, assessed the well’s operational readiness, safety standards, and regulatory compliance prior to drilling.

Governor Dapo Abiodun hailed the drilling as a landmark achievement for Ogun, projecting that the project will create jobs, attract federal investment, and stimulate infrastructure development along the coastal axis.

Geological surveys had confirmed hydrocarbon deposits, prompting technical engagements and independent verification of the well’s coordinates by the Ogun State Government.

Security has been a central focus, with naval personnel safeguarding the site for over 18 months. The Eba well is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to expand oil production beyond the Niger Delta, historically dominated by states such as Delta and Rivers.

Stakeholders emphasise strict adherence to environmental safeguards, community engagement, and regulatory compliance to ensure sustainable operations.

For residents, the Eba project represents not only crude oil but an opportunity for economic revitalisation. Nationally, it contributes to energy security, diversifies production, and strengthens Nigeria’s position in the global oil market.
