Okonkwo Super Eagles debut confirmed after FIFA approval, with Nigeria calling up the goalkeeper for the Unity Cup tournament next month
The Nigeria Football Federation, led by its official communications unit, has confirmed that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is set to make his debut for the Super Eagles at the forthcoming Unity Cup tournament scheduled for next month, following FIFA approval of his change of international allegiance from England to Nigeria.
Arthur Okonkwo, the former Arsenal goalkeeper, previously represented England at U16, U17 and U18 levels before completing his switch to Nigeria at senior level.
The approval from FIFA, granted on Monday, formally clears the 24-year-old for selection, paving the way for Okonkwo Super Eagles debut in the international competition.
An official of the Nigeria Football Federation, who spoke to ESPN, said Okonkwo demonstrated strong commitment to the switch, describing his enthusiasm as a key factor that helped streamline the process.
The official also confirmed that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is eager to include the goalkeeper in his plans ahead of the tournament.
“He was very enthusiastic about switching allegiance and playing for Nigeria, and that made things easier for us,” the official said.
“The coach, Eric Chelle, wants him and would like to have him in the squad as soon as possible.”
Okonkwo’s inclusion comes after a standout season at club level, where his performances have drawn attention for their consistency and reliability.
He has made 42 appearances across all competitions and recorded 10 clean sheets in 37 Championship matches, underlining his growing reputation as a dependable last line of defence.
The move is widely seen as a significant and positive reinforcement for Nigeria’s goalkeeping options, adding depth and competition within the squad as preparations intensify for the Unity Cup.
His arrival is expected to bring fresh energy and increased competition for the starting position.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to begin their Unity Cup campaign against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at The Valley, the home ground of Charlton Athletic in England.
Nigeria, the reigning champions of the tournament, secured the previous title after defeating Jamaica on penalties following a 2–2 draw in regular time.
Okonkwo Super Eagles debut is therefore anticipated with considerable interest, as the national team seeks to maintain its strong record in the competition while integrating new talent into the squad.
