Rising Yoruba actress Omotola Odunsi has died unexpectedly, leaving Nollywood in mourning. Colleagues and mentors share tributes
The Yoruba film industry is reeling from the unexpected death of fast-rising actress Omotola Odunsi, whose passing has left fans and colleagues in deep sorrow.
Her death was confirmed on Thursday by fellow actor Akinola Akano, popularly known as Segbowe, via an emotional tribute on Instagram.
He shared their last chat, in which Omotola assured him she was recovering from an illness—only to pass away shortly afterward.
“Motola! Strange but I tried checking on you at the wee hours of that morning. You said you were FINE & BACK! This is a rude shock. Journey well, sister. God be with your family,” Segbowe wrote.
As of press time, the cause of death remains undisclosed.
Omotola, who was gaining traction in the Yoruba film industry, has received an outpouring of tributes from actors and fans alike.
Among them is budding actress and Portable’s baby mama, Ashabi Simple, who recalled their recent encounter and plans to collaborate.

“I’m shocked. You’re one of the best actors I’m rooting for. We promised to feature each other in our next project… you laboured and didn’t wait to reap,” she wrote.
Veteran actor Odunlade Adekola, under whose mentorship Omotola launched her career, simply wrote:
“Jesus Christ. RIP Omotola.”
Omotola Odunsi began acting while in her second year at Olabisi Onabanjo University and joined the industry fully in 2023 after a successful audition at Adekola’s film school.
She quickly made a name for herself, starring in Yoruba films such as:
