Oyo pupils rescued after 56 days in captivity are set for family reunion following medical checks, support and a coordinated security operation

The Oyo pupils rescued from three schools in the area regained their freedom on Friday after a prolonged ordeal and have been receiving medical attention and psychosocial support at the Headquarters of the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services, Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan.
Governor Seyi Makinde, who visited the victims after their release, said they would remain under observation before being transferred to the state government for further rehabilitation and reintegration.
“Our plan right now is to watch them over the next 48 hours. So by Monday, we think an assessment will be done, and maybe there’ll be a formal transfer from the military to the state,” Makinde said.
The governor added that preparations had begun to reunite the children and teachers with their families, revealing that some of the pupils had repeatedly asked to see their parents after regaining their freedom.
The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed gunmen invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; L.A. Primary School; and Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esienle, in Oriire Local Government Area.
The attack triggered widespread concern across Oyo State and renewed calls for stronger protection of schools and rural communities.
The victims’ release followed a coordinated operation involving security agencies, including the military, police, intelligence operatives and local security groups. Authorities described the operation as a significant breakthrough in efforts to secure the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.
Families in Ogbomoso and surrounding communities expressed relief after weeks of anxiety, with many parents eagerly awaiting the chance to embrace their children again.
Religious gatherings were also held to give thanks for the safe return of the victims. Prof Wole Alamu, husband of the principal of Ahoro Esinle School, Mrs Rachael Alamu, was among those who celebrated the development after his wife returned home safely.
Beyond the emotional reunion, the incident has renewed debate over security gaps in Oriire Local Government Area, which covers a large number of communities but has limited security infrastructure.
Traditional rulers in the area have appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen their presence, upgrade existing police formations and improve surveillance to prevent similar incidents.
The Elerepamo of Pamo, Oba Ayobami Ogunmakinde, said the abduction exposed the urgent need for improved security arrangements in the area.
“We have about 740 villages, yet we have only one police division covering a very large area,” he said.
Community leaders also called for continued attention to the safety of schools, particularly in rural areas where security presence remains limited.
The Oyo State Government said it would continue to work with federal authorities to support the victims’ recovery process and ensure they receive the necessary care after their traumatic experience.
While celebrating the return of the pupils and teachers, faith-based organisations and community groups urged authorities not to relent in efforts to rescue other Nigerians still held captive across the country.
The return of the victims marks a hopeful moment for affected families, while also highlighting the need for sustained action to address insecurity and protect vulnerable communities.
