PDP appoints Kabiru Turaki to lead interim NEC following Supreme Court ruling, deepening internal leadership crisis in the party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Kabiru Turaki as chairman of its interim National Working Committee (NWC) following mounting internal disputes and a recent Supreme Court ruling that nullified its national convention.

The decision was taken on Monday during the party’s 103rd National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja, where a 13-member interim committee was constituted to oversee the affairs of the party.

The committee is expected to stabilise the party structure amid escalating leadership tensions and legal setbacks that have triggered uncertainty within the opposition bloc.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is among key figures backing the restructuring process within the party, as stakeholders move to reposition the PDP ahead of future political contests.

Other members of the interim committee include Woyengikuro Daniel, Hamza Koshe, Ihediwa Nnabugwu, Isa Abubakar, Okechukwu Daniel, Theophilus Shan, Ini Ememobong, Aribisala Idowu, Bara’u Shafi’i, Ogbu Chinenyenwa, Umar Aji, and Arapaja Taofeek, who serves as secretary.

The development follows a series of legal battles over the party’s leadership structure, culminating in a Supreme Court judgment that invalidated the PDP convention held in November 2025.

The apex court held that the party violated a subsisting Federal High Court order that restrained it from proceeding with the exercise, a ruling that has since intensified internal divisions.

The controversy stems from a suit filed by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, which challenged the legality of the convention and alleged violations of the party’s internal rules.

Subsequent rulings by both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal upheld the position that the PDP acted in disregard of judicial orders.

The Supreme Court, in its final decision, dismissed the appeal filed by the party faction that supported the convention, describing it as lacking merit.

With the appointment of the interim committee, the PDP now faces the challenge of restoring internal cohesion while navigating legal and political uncertainties ahead of future elections.
