Plateau rape cases rise as CP Bassey Ewah reports 64 cases and warns against settlements, insisting all offenders will face prosecution
The Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Bassey Ewah, has raised alarm over a disturbing increase in sexual offences, revealing that the command has recorded 64 rape and defilement cases since he assumed office in February 2026.
Rising rape incidents in Plateau State, disclosure was made on Friday during the parade of 18 suspects arrested for offences including rape, homicide, illegal arms possession and cultism at the Police Command Headquarters in Jos.
CP Ewah described the trend as a “disturbing epidemic,” stressing that sexual violence in the state has become increasingly alarming, with victims now including both girls and boys, often abused by individuals entrusted with their care.
He declared that rape and defilement are not family matters, warning against attempts by relatives or community leaders to settle such cases privately or shield offenders from justice.
According to him, all reported cases are being thoroughly investigated and will be prosecuted in line with the law, adding that there will be no room for compromise or informal settlements within any police division in the state.
The police commissioner further warned that anyone attempting to interfere with investigations or plead on behalf of suspects would be treated as an accessory after the fact and face prosecution.
He urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and report any suspected abuse immediately to security agencies, emphasising the importance of community cooperation in tackling the crisis.
CP Ewah also linked the rising cases to broader social concerns, calling for urgent collective action to protect vulnerable children and restore accountability within families and communities.
