Saudi authorities instructed anyone spotting the crescent, with or without binoculars, to report their observation to the nearest court.

In Nigeria, the NSCIA announced that Ramadan will commence on Wednesday, February 18, if the crescent moon is sighted on the 29th of Sha’aban, otherwise the fast will begin on February 19.

The declaration came under the leadership of the NSCIA President-General and Amirul Mumineen, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.

The council highlighted challenges facing Nigerian Muslims, including rising Islamophobic narratives, insurgent attacks, and biased media reporting.

It cited incidents in Southern Kaduna, Kwara, Kebbi, and Maiduguri, urging the community to remain steadfast and observant during the holy month.

The NSCIA also confirmed that the National Moon Sighting Committee, in partnership with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has begun monitoring the crescent moon and advising Muslim leaders accordingly.

Earlier, Muslim leaders in Yorubaland, including the League of Imams and Alfas, also set the start of Ramadan 2026 for February 18, based on astronomical calculations and international Islamic resolutions.

The announcement ensures that Muslims across Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can prepare for fasting, suhoor, and iftar celebrations.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is considered the holiest period for Muslims worldwide.
