Reno Omokri claims Peter Obi has gone silent on social media after Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu countered his poverty claims with data on Obi’s Anambra tenure

Former presidential aide and social media influencer, Reno Omokri, has alleged that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has disappeared from social media following Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s rebuttal of Obi’s recent claims about poverty in Nigeria.

Omokri pointed out that Obi, known for his frequent social media activity, has not posted anything for three days, a stark contrast to his usual daily or even twice-daily posts. “Peter Obi has posted on social media every day for the last two weeks, sometimes even twice a day.

But after Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu fired him with factual and detailed data about his failure to build even a single nursery, primary or secondary school, university, or stand-alone hospital for the eight years that he was Anambra Governor, Peter Obi has not posted anything on social media for the past three days.

Today is Wednesday, April 30, 2025. His last post was on Sunday, April 27, 2025,” Omokri stated.

Omokri suggested that Obi might be “hiding in Indonesia,” his “new favourite country,” implying that Obi was avoiding the public eye after Sanwo-Olu’s detailed response.

This allegation comes after Sanwo-Olu criticized Obi for claiming at Johns Hopkins University that Nigeria has more people living in poverty than China, Indonesia, and Vietnam combined.

In a statement titled “Factually Addressing Mr. Peter Obi’s Criticism of Nigeria at Johns Hopkins University,” Sanwo-Olu accused Obi of disparaging Nigeria on international platforms.

Sanwo-Olu also challenged Obi’s credibility on poverty issues, citing data that showed an increase in Anambra State’s poverty rate during Obi’s tenure as governor.

“Under Peter Obi, a two-term Anambra Governor, poverty in Anambra increased. It did not reduce. Before Peter Obi became Anambra Governor, the poverty rate in Anambra was 41.4 per cent.

But after only two years in office, the poverty rate in Anambra jumped to 53.7 per cent,” Sanwo-Olu stated. He further contrasted Obi’s record with that of his successor, Willie Obiano, who reportedly reduced the poverty rate significantly.

Sanwo-Olu also contrasted Obi’s record with his own and that of Bola Tinubu. “Mr. Obi contributed to the increase in poverty in Nigeria.

Governor Tinubu, as he then was, was responsible for lifting millions out of poverty. Being that that is the case, who should criticize who?” he concluded.
