Rivers State Police Command has intensified enforcement operations across the state with a renewed ban on concealed vehicle number plates and the use of unregistered vehicles, in a sweeping security measure aimed at curbing violent crime.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the Command warned that motorists who cover, alter, or operate vehicles without valid registration numbers will be arrested and prosecuted.

Rivers Police crack down on hidden number platesforms part of broader efforts to tackle “one-chance” robberies, kidnappings, and other criminal activities linked to the use of commercial transport systems in the state.

Authorities also reaffirmed the existing restriction on tricycle, commonly known as keke, operations between 10:00 p.m. and early morning hours, stating that the rule remains in full force.

According to the Command, the measures are designed to dismantle criminal networks that exploit public transport to target unsuspecting passengers.

“The covering, alteration, driving without plate number or concealment of vehicle plate numbers is strictly prohibited. The Commissioner of Police has directed the arrest of offenders without hesitation,” the statement said.

The police further announced that unregistered vehicles will no longer be tolerated within Rivers State, urging owners to immediately regularise their documentation to avoid prosecution.

Beginning May 18, 2026, the Command also introduced a ban on commercial keke buses fitted with tinted glass or coverings that obstruct the visibility of passengers or occupants, stating that such vehicles will be impounded.

Rivers police outlaw hidden number plate use and related restrictions were also linked to efforts to combat “one-chance” operations, a criminal tactic in which victims are abducted or robbed inside fake commercial vehicles.

Residents were advised to avoid boarding vehicles in isolated or poorly lit areas and to remain vigilant, particularly during night-time travel.

The Command further encouraged commuters to record or photograph vehicle registration details before boarding transport and to share such information with trusted contacts as a safety precaution.

The State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, disclosed this on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, while parading the three officers before journalists in Port Harcourt.

According to the command, the officers were linked to the incident that occurred last Thursday along Ada George in Port Harcourt, where Obodo was shot dead.

A member of the team, an inspector who fled after the shooting, has been declared a deserter.

CP Adepoju stated that the three arrested officers were subjected to an orderly room trial. Following the conclusion of the investigation and the establishment of their culpability, they have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and will be charged to court.

“I am here to provide updates on some serious incidents recently recorded in the state, including the investigation into the death of one Anthony A. Obodo… Following the conclusion of the investigation and the establishment of the culpability of the officers involved… the officers being paraded today have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and will be charged to court,” Adepoju said.

The commissioner noted that he understood the concerns of Obodo’s family and members of the public, adding that the Command has taken appropriate disciplinary action against the police personnel involved.

Obodo, a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt who was reportedly awaiting his NYSC call-up letter, was shot during a police pursuit.
