Rivers police shooting leaves Inspector Ibrahim Sani dead; Inspector Victor Okus arrested and set for orderly room trial, investigation ongoing

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Inspector Victor Okus for shooting two colleagues at Next Cash and Carry Supermarket, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt, on Sunday afternoon.

The incident involved officers attached to the 14 Police Mobile Force, Yola, who were on joint guard duty with military personnel.

Victims were identified as Inspector Ibrahim Sani and Inspector Daniel Dauda.

According to a statement by Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, the officers were shot in the head and neck, respectively.

Inspector Sani later died from gunshot injuries at Nopsam Hospital, while Inspector Dauda is receiving medical treatment. Sani’s remains have been deposited at the Military Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

“The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened to report a tragic and distressing incident that occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, resulting in the loss of a dedicated police officer, Inspector Ibrahim Sani,” the statement read.

Inspector Okus, attached to 17 PMF but on special duty at Intels, Onne, is currently in police custody. He will face an orderly room trial before being charged in court.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, describing it as a “reprehensible act” and stressing that handling firearms on duty is a serious responsibility.

Iringe-Koko extended condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Inspector Sani and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.

Suspect is being interrogated but has been evasive, while a senior police source dismissed claims that the shooting was accidental.
