Rivers United fall 1-0 to Zambia’s Power Dynamos in CAF Champions League, leaving Nigeria’s club on the brink of elimination

Rivers United’s CAF Champions League campaign is in jeopardy after a 1-0 home defeat to Zambia’s Power Dynamos on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, The PUNCH reports.

Defender Kondwani Chiboni scored the decisive goal in the 50th minute, leaving Nigeria’s sole representatives bottom of Group A with just one point from four matches.

Power Dynamos have four points, RS Berkane sit second with seven, and defending champions Pyramids lead with 10 points.

Both teams had drawn 0-0 in Lusaka during their previous meeting, but Rivers United were unable to capitalise on home advantage despite dominating parts of the match.

The NPFL leaders’ chances of progressing now rely not only on winning their remaining two fixtures but also on RS Berkane losing both of theirs, including the February 13 clash in Morocco. Rivers United will next host group leaders Pyramids in Uyo on February 8.

The Pride of Rivers’ continental campaign has been disappointing. They opened with a 3-0 defeat at Pyramids, drew 1-1 at home to RS Berkane after leading, and then managed a goalless draw in Lusaka against Power Dynamos before Sunday’s setback.

While their CAF journey falters, Rivers United continue to lead the NPFL, holding a one-point advantage with three league matches in hand due to their Champions League commitments.
