Rovers FC accident leaves players with internal bleeding after a crash in Edo State, prompting evacuation to Asaba for urgent treatment
Team manager of Rovers FC of Calabar, Edem Oyom, has confirmed that several players are suffering from internal bleeding following a serious road traffic incident on Monday morning in Okada junction in Edo State, while the team was travelling to Lagos for a scheduled fixture against Sporting Lagos FC.
The crash occurred when the vehicle conveying the team reportedly lost control and tumbled at Okada town, Edo State, Nigeria.
One player, whose identity has not been disclosed, was critically affected, while several others sustained deep cuts and multiple injuries.
Team officials, including Oyom, also sustained injuries in the incident.
Speaking on the development, Edem Oyom described the situation as serious but said medical personnel had managed to stabilise the most critically affected player.
He noted that other injured players are responding to treatment, though concerns remain due to complications linked to internal bleeding.
Medical staff at a facility in Okada initially attended to the victims before the decision was taken to transfer them for further care.
The injured players and officials were subsequently evacuated to Asaba in Delta State to receive more intensive medical attention.
Oyom said the club is working diligently to ensure the players recover fully, adding that the priority at this stage is stabilisation and close monitoring.
He emphasised that the team is maintaining communication with medical teams handling the cases as recovery efforts continue.
The incident has disrupted the team’s preparations for their scheduled match in Lagos, with attention now focused squarely on the health and recovery of the players involved.
The development underscores the unpredictable risks teams face while travelling for competitive fixtures, turning what should have been a routine journey into a distressing and urgent medical situation.
