Senate confirms Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole as Supreme Court Justice following review by Judiciary Committee and presidential nomination
The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole (JCA) as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The confirmation followed the presentation and review of the report from the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central).
The committee assessed Justice Oyewole’s qualifications, judicial track record, and responses during the screening process, concluding he is fit for the apex court.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read President Bola Tinubu’s letter requesting the confirmation, citing Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for the nomination.
President Tinubu stated, “Pursuant to Section 231 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Hon. Justice Oyewole Kayode as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”
The Senate unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendation, officially elevating Justice Oyewole to Nigeria’s highest judicial bench.
This appointment marks another step in the administration’s efforts to maintain a competent and effective judiciary.
