CAS promises a swift ruling on Senegal AFCON 2025 appeal after Morocco was awarded the title following a controversial penalty decision

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has pledged a prompt ruling on Senegal’s appeal against Morocco’s award of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, following a controversial stoppage-time penalty in the final.

Senegal initially celebrated a 1-0 victory over Morocco on January 18, only for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to later award the match 3-0 to the hosts after a dramatic late incident. Senegal’s players walked off the pitch in protest over the penalty before returning, but CAF ruled the team had forfeited the fixture.

CAS director general Matthieu Reeb acknowledged the urgency of the dispute, stating that arbitration proceedings would be conducted “as swiftly as possible” while ensuring a fair hearing for all parties. No specific timeline for the decision has yet been set.

Former CAF disciplinary panel head Raymond Hack warned that the arbitration could stretch for months, leaving the saga unresolved deep into the international football calendar.

Senegal’s appeal highlights ongoing tensions over governance and fairness in African football competitions.
