Shehu criticises Buhari Obasanjo Jonathan praise, commending Jonathan’s 2015 concession while condemning Buhari and Obasanjo in a scathing post
In a post shared on X on Monday, Mahdi Shehu argued that former President Goodluck Jonathan would be judged favourably by history for his decision to relinquish power after the 2015 poll, describing it as an act that helped prevent further political instability.
Shehu stated that Jonathan demonstrated rare restraint during a tense political moment, insisting that the former president acted in a manner that prioritised national peace over personal ambition.
The remarks form part of what has become a widely discussed commentary on Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
However, the tone shifted sharply as Shehu turned his attention to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he accused of harbouring deeply negative political traits and a legacy he described in highly critical terms.
“Obasanjo will continue to harvest evil for evil, treachery for treachery, hate for hate, greed for greed and selfishness for selfishness,” Shehu stated in a strongly worded passage that has since generated significant online reactions.
He also directed criticism at former President Muhammadu Buhari, arguing that historians would judge his eight-year administration harshly.
Shehu described Buhari’s tenure as one that would be remembered for governance failures and unmet expectations, claiming it would serve as a reference point in discussions about leadership shortcomings.
“No matter the volumes written on PMB, historians will write and document how Buhari’s eight years of stewardship will continue to be a reference point of empty, false and fluid claims of honesty, ineptitude, zero capacity and how to preside over the destruction of a nation,” he said.
Shehu further questioned Obasanjo’s continued involvement in national discourse, suggesting that his interventions were not driven by patriotic intent but by personal motives.
“Anything being championed by Obasanjo is neither for God nor for country. Beneath it are articulated venom of treachery, hate and vindictiveness,” he added.
The remarks have sparked renewed debate across political and civic circles, with Shehu’s contrasting assessments of Nigeria’s former leaders drawing both criticism and support online.
