The annual event, organised by the Ministry of Defence, honours Nigerian military personnel who paid the supreme price in service to the nation. President Tinubu was absent as he is attending the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026 in the United Arab Emirates.

The ceremony commemorates soldiers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peacekeeping missions, and ongoing internal security operations, including counter-terrorism efforts.

It also celebrates living veterans and serves as a platform to mobilise financial and moral support for ex-servicemen and families of fallen heroes.

Speaking earlier at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Gala and Award Night on January 13, President Tinubu charged the Armed Forces to remain disciplined, loyal and united, describing them as guardians of Nigeria’s democracy.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving military welfare, equipment, training and living conditions.

Tinubu had also unveiled the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem and appeal fund at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, where he paid tribute to fallen soldiers and pledged sustained government support for their families.

Nigeria observes Armed Forces Remembrance Day on January 15 to reflect its national history, particularly the end of the Nigerian Civil War.
