Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed interest in returning to Old Trafford as a caretaker manager following the recent sacking of Ruben Amorim, according to reports.

Football journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that the 52-year-old is seeking a temporary six-month contract and is “under consideration” as the club evaluates options for an interim appointment ahead of the next season.

Solskjaer, who left Besiktas in August, is currently without a club.

United are understood to be aware of his interest as discussions continue regarding a suitable short-term managerial solution.

In the immediate term, former United midfielder Darren Fletcher is expected to oversee the squad while the club finalises a caretaker or interim manager.

A permanent appointment is anticipated before the start of next season.

Solskjaer’s potential return would mark a dramatic reunion with the club he famously managed between 2018 and 2021, during which he stabilised the team and delivered memorable performances in domestic and European competitions.
