Sunday Oliseh reveals Super Eagles coaching struggles, citing lack of training tools, jerseys, and sponsorship challenges

Former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has revealed the difficulties he faced while leading Nigeria’s national football team, citing a lack of basic training tools and equipment.

Oliseh, who became the Super Eagles coach in 2015 following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, spoke on his YouTube channel and Oliseh’s Global Football Insights Podcast about the challenges.

“When I was coaching the Super Eagles, we didn’t have the equipment,” he said.

He recalled times when training sessions had to be postponed because the team had no extra jerseys, waiting for washed kits to dry before practice could continue.

“It was surprising to me because I knew that a strong country like ours should not have trouble getting sponsors,” Oliseh added, pointing to the unexpected difficulty of securing basic gear in a football-loving nation.

Despite these obstacles, Oliseh achieved notable successes.

He led the CHAN Eagles to qualify for the African Nations Championship in Rwanda and maintained a strong record with the senior team, losing just two games and scoring 19 goals while conceding six in 14 matches before departing in February 2016.

Oliseh’s reflections shed light on the resource constraints faced by Nigeria’s football teams, underscoring the gap between the country’s talent and the support structures available to national coaches.
