Former NFF president Amaju Pinnick reveals Nigeria nearly secured Tammy Abraham before England capped him in 2017, closing the door on Super Eagles

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has revealed that the Super Eagles came very close to securing Tammy Abraham before the striker ultimately committed to England in 2017.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Abraham was eligible to represent Nigeria throughout his youth career, even as he rose through England’s age-grade teams.

Pinnick disclosed on The Playzone podcast that the NFF engaged Abraham and his family in detailed discussions, believing his heritage and personal ties would sway his decision.

“We sat and spoke, and we had agreed that he would come to play. But at the last moment he changed his decision,” Pinnick said.

The turning point came when England capped Abraham in a European Championship qualifier against the Czech Republic, permanently tying him to the Three Lions.

Pinnick admitted the missed opportunity still stings, noting his close relationship with Abraham’s father. “I spoke to his father, we grew up together. He would have played for Nigeria,” he added.

Since choosing England, Abraham has earned 11 caps and scored three goals, with his last appearance in June 2022 in a UEFA Nations League match against Italy.

By contrast, his club career has flourished, featuring successful spells with AS Roma, AC Milan, Besiktas, and now a return to the Premier League with Aston Villa.

Reflecting on Abraham’s international choice, Pinnick believes the Super Eagles could have offered more continuity and emotional connection compared to the fierce competition for opportunities in European national teams.
