The Super Eagles Unity Cup preview comes as both teams prepare for a high-profile clash in the friendly invitational tournament scheduled for 26 May.

The winner of the semi-final will face either Jamaica or India in the final of the competition.

Tembo acknowledged Nigeria’s quality and pedigree, describing the Super Eagles as one of Africa’s top national teams, while insisting that Zimbabwe remains focused on delivering a strong performance.

He said preparation, discipline and tactical organisation would be key factors as his side looks to compete effectively against the three-time African champions.

“Nigeria is a top side with quality players, so we respect them. But at the same time, we believe in our squad. Preparation will be key — organisation, discipline and making sure the players understand their roles,” Tembo said.

Zimbabwe coach described the fixture as an opportunity for his players to test themselves and showcase their ability on an international stage.

Zimbabwe and Nigeria have already met twice during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with both encounters ending in draws, highlighting the competitive balance between the two sides.

The Presidency’s invitation to Governor Lawal emphasised that his participation would strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic standing at the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Economic Conference (NDIEC). NIDEC is a leading global platform where governments, investors, multinational companies, development finance institutions, foundations and partners converge to form strategic partnerships and explore investment opportunities.

The summit is expected to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s goals through the National Energy Transition Plan, positioning Nigeria as a key partner in Africa–Canada economic cooperation.

The Zamfara State Government views NIDEC as more than just a diplomatic engagement, it is a strategic economic mission aimed at attracting investment, technology transfer, development funding and technical partnerships to drive the state’s economic transformation. Governor Lawal’s involvement will help position Zamfara as Nigeria’s emerging hub for agribusiness, strategic minerals development, human capital growth and digital innovation.

Nigeria’s delegation also includes the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; the governors Charles Soludo of Anambra State, Prof. Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Sen. Uba Sani of Kaduna State, and Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, among others.
