Tinubu considers Kwankwaso 2027 running mate as political tension grows in North. Shettima’s position faces internal criticism amid Kano-based pressure

Across Northern Nigeria, political tension is rising over speculation that President Bola Tinubu may replace Vice President Kashim Shettima with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in 2027.

While some groups back the Tinubu-Shettima ticket, others are pushing for a shake-up. The strongest call comes from those backing Kwankwaso, the former Kano State governor and leader of the NNPP, to step in as Tinubu’s new deputy.

A political ally close to Kwankwaso said the former defence minister is open to the idea. “I think he will bring vast experience and energy if he is chosen. With him on the ticket, the election is a done deal,” the source claimed.

They argued that Vice President Shettima has not shouldered enough responsibility in governance or politics, blaming him for Tinubu’s dwindling appeal in the North. In contrast, Kwankwaso is seen as a popular figure with a large youth following and strong influence in Kano.

Lamara Garba, a respected political commentator, stated: “Since 1999, no Northern politician has remained as relevant and respected as Kwankwaso.”

But not all agree. Professor Kamilu Fagge warned that dropping Shettima could backfire, especially in the North East. “Kwankwaso may win Kano, but Tinubu could lose vital votes elsewhere,” he said.

Fagge also raised concerns about reviving religious tensions with another Muslim-Muslim ticket, and pointed out the potential for a personality clash between Tinubu and Kwankwaso.

Kaduna-based analyst Alwalu Abdullahi was more blunt: “Kwankwaso is overrated. He failed to deliver Kano in 2019 and is known for political conflicts.”

Former Senator Masaud el Jilbrin Doguwa echoed this sentiment, saying the move could alienate core APC loyalists and trigger unrest among other powerful Northern figures who helped Tinubu rise.

As 2027 looms, internal debate grows louder over who best complements Tinubu’s chances at a second term.
