Trump’s secret flight from Turkey reportedly involved a catering truck and decoy Air Force One after an Iranian threat, according to US reports

US President Donald Trump was secretly transferred from Air Force One to a smaller military aircraft at Ankara Esenboğa Airport in Turkey in July 2026, following a reported Iranian threat against his life, in an elaborate security operation that kept journalists and some White House personnel unaware of his movements.

The remarkable details emerged in reports by The Washington Post and other major outlets, which described a carefully planned deception designed to conceal Trump’s actual aircraft and destination from potential hostile actors.

Trump had attended a NATO summit in Ankara before departing Turkey. Publicly, the presidential travel operation appeared routine, with the president seen boarding an older Boeing 747 serving as Air Force One.

Behind the scenes, however, security officials had arranged a different journey.

According to the reports, Trump was moved from the aircraft through a catering truck positioned at the plane before being driven across the airport to a smaller C-32A military aircraft.

The move allowed the presidential 747 to serve as a decoy while Trump travelled separately. Journalists and some White House staff members believed Trump remained aboard the larger aircraft.

The operation reportedly went further than simply changing aircraft. Members of the travelling press pool were instructed to keep their window shades closed, limiting their ability to see activity outside the plane.

Trump later appeared to acknowledge the unusual security precautions when reporters questioned the restrictions.

“You’re probably on a dangerous flight,” Trump reportedly told journalists, adding that he faced threats constantly.

The deception was particularly significant because the operation was reportedly prompted by intelligence indicating a credible threat from Iran. The exact nature of the intelligence has not been publicly disclosed in full.

The C-32A subsequently flew to RAF Mildenhall in Britain, where the operation continued. According to reporting, the aircraft carrying Trump arrived at around 10.20pm, with the decoy Air Force One arriving only minutes later.

Trump was later seen publicly descending from the older Air Force One at Mildenhall, helping preserve the appearance that he had travelled aboard it from Turkey.

The White House has defended the extraordinary security measures. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said there were numerous threats against the president and that officials used every available measure to protect him.

“There are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal,” Cheung said.

The operation has drawn attention partly because presidential travel is normally accompanied by extensive logistical and media arrangements.

Concealing the president’s actual aircraft therefore required coordination across security personnel, aviation crews and the travelling press operation.

The use of a decoy aircraft is not entirely unprecedented. US presidents have previously relied on deceptive travel arrangements when security or diplomatic considerations demanded secrecy.

The Wall Street Journal noted that Bill Clinton used a similar deception during a 2000 trip to Pakistan, while other presidents have undertaken covert journeys for security and diplomatic reasons.

The Ankara operation nevertheless stands out for the unusual detail of the airport catering truck and the degree to which even members of the presidential travelling party were reportedly kept in the dark.

The episode also illustrates the extraordinary security challenges surrounding presidential movements amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

For Trump’s protection team, concealing where the president actually was became as important as protecting the aircraft carrying him.

The full circumstances surrounding the reported Iranian threat remain classified, and US officials have not publicly released the intelligence that prompted the operation.
