US President Donald Trump has announced a Trump White House media ban targeting CNN, MS NOW and Politico, saying the three news organisations will be barred from the White House over coverage he described as false.
Trump announced the restriction on Friday, September 18, 2026, in a post on his Truth Social platform, accusing the outlets of repeatedly publishing what he called “fake news” about him, his administration and the United States. He also indicated that other media organisations could face similar restrictions.
The announcement initially created uncertainty over the precise scope of the restriction. Representatives of the affected organisations were still working from the White House on Friday after Trump’s announcement, while the administration had yet to publicly provide detailed instructions on how the ban would be implemented.
Trump later told reporters that he did not want the organisations in the White House and suggested the restriction could extend as far as possible. He said the decision was not prompted by one particular report but by what he described as a cumulative pattern of coverage over several years.
The president also singled out Politico over government spending on subscriptions to its products during the administration of former President Joe Biden. Trump characterised the payments as improper, although reporting on the matter has noted that the spending involved government subscriptions to Politico products rather than a government grant to keep the news organisation operating.
CNN said it stood behind its journalists covering the White House, while Politico said it would continue reporting on the administration. CNN also argued that journalists have a constitutional right to carry out their reporting without government interference.
The move has raised questions over press access and the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech and freedom of the press in the United States. Legal experts cited in reports said the legality of the restriction could depend on how broadly it is enforced and whether journalists are excluded from general White House facilities or only from limited presidential events.
The White House has previously faced legal challenges over restrictions imposed on news organisations. The administration restricted Associated Press access to certain presidential events in 2025, leading to litigation over whether the government could exclude a news organisation because of its editorial choices.
Trump’s latest action adds to a broader dispute between his administration and major media organisations. Since returning to office, the White House has changed aspects of how press access and the presidential media pool are managed, reducing some traditional media access while giving greater prominence to other outlets.
