Unai Simón has been named the 2026 Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year, winning the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London.
The Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper and Spain’s first-choice goalkeeper was recognised for an outstanding year that included a key role in Spain’s 2026 World Cup triumph.
Simón kept a series of clean sheets during the tournament and conceded only one goal across the competition, earning the Golden Glove award. His performances helped Spain secure their second World Cup title.
The Yashin Trophy, named after the legendary Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin, is presented annually to the world’s best male goalkeeper. Simón becomes the first Spaniard to win the award.
In his acceptance speech, Simón thanked his family, coaches, teammates and club for their support.
Cata Coll of Barcelona won the corresponding women’s goalkeeper award on the same night.
