UNILAG ends a 10-year ban on student union activities, swearing in Bolaji Akinpelu as Students’ Union President with full support and resources from management
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially lifted its 10-year ban on student union activities, swearing in new leaders on March 24, 2026.
Bolaji Akinpelu was inaugurated as the new Students’ Union President at Tayo Aderinokun Hall, with Vice-Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola leading the ceremony.
Other student leaders, including hall executives and representatives from the Institute of Continuing Education, were also sworn in.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Johnson Agunsoye, described the development as a key step toward full student representation.
A complete student union government is expected by the 2026/2027 academic session.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the new leaders to serve responsibly and pledged ₦5 million to support their activities, a temporary office, and an 18-seater bus for their use.
Police officer Comfort Alabi advised students to maintain peace and avoid cultism and violence.
UNILAG suspended student union activities in 2016 following violent protests over poor welfare conditions. With the new leadership in place, student representation has officially returned to the university.
